NEVER Too Old

What is it with people and bucket lists? I mean, I get it. Sure. You make this list of things you want to do before you die. You make a list of experiences you want to have, places you want to go, etc. I get it. But here’s my question: When do you actually start doing those things? At what point does your “bucket list” become your “to do list” for the week, month or year?  What is everyone waiting for that they have this bucket list? It seems odd to me that some folks feel they have to wait until they are “old enough” to start checking items off their bucket list. Other folks apparently reach a point where they feel they are “too old” to pursue some items on their bucket list. This dichotomy confuses me. Just think about it: You’re creating a list of things to do when you get the chance and then you’re too old to do everything on the list. WTF? Continue reading

Life’s Most Necessary Skill

Yes, I admit to “baiting” with the title. I was hoping it would make people wonder, “What might that be?” or “What does this guy Borelli think it is?”  My answer: Overcoming adversity. Out of the thousands of skills we need to learn (and hopefully master) throughout our lives, the ability to successfully cope with and overcome adversity is the single most important skill we can master.  I KNOW there are plenty of people thinking, “But what about…?” and putting in a different life’s skill.  I won’t argue you with you because there may be other life skills that you as an individual feel are more important.  To me – because of the quirks of my personality, knowledge and life’s experience – overcoming adversity is the single most important life skill a person needs to master. Using some contemporary events, let me expound a little bit on why. Continue reading

Learning Is Life

I can’t begin to count or tell you how many times my children have heard me say: Learn something new every day.  The day you stop learning is the day you start dying.  It’s a belief I’ve held for as far back in my life as I can remember.  I truly believe that virtually everything you read is a source for learning and, if you use an active mind, anything you watch can be the same; every person you interact with can offer a lesson; the majority of the time you spend awake each day can provide you with some new learning experience. You just have to open your mind to the possibilities and WANT to learn. Continue reading

When Is “Too Late”?

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.  How many times have you heard THAT statement?  Better yet, how many times have you heard that statement used by someone who you believed simply didn’t want to try to teach someone something new? Or learn something new themselves?  From past experience I know for a fact that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.  In fact, you can teach an old dog new tricks right up until you have to say goodbye to them and wonder if you’ll go get a puppy replacement. Continue reading
