Somehow, somewhere along the way, we as a society seem to have come to the belief that every person perceives every experience in the same way. The fact of individual experience, individual knowledge, individual background, individual resilience… these things all seem to be dismissed in favor of the belief that if X happens to little Johnny and it’s hurtful to him, then if X happens to little Mark it must also be hurtful to him. What Do We Learn From Autumn and Trees?

The glory days of spring and summer have passed. The days are shorter, the nights are longer, the fires are warm and blankets are good. Snuggling occurs far more often. For all that, many people will tell you “spring” if you ask them what their favorite season is. They’ll cite the rebirth, the returning greenery, the warmer temperatures – so many “new” things. Falling Down or Getting Knocked Down

Each of us… every single one of us knows what it’s like to fall down. We’ve done it. It’s not something we can “relate” to because we’ve seen someone else do it. It’s something we’ve done: as a child, as a teenager, as a young adult, as a middle aged individual and (unfortunately) sometimes as an elderly individual. One of the greatest things about Earth is gravity; and one of our realities of life is that gravity sucks. We fight it all our lives. When we trip, lose our balance, etc. we fall. Thanks, gravity. Defining & Recognizing Strength

When we hear someone say, “He’s a strong person,” or “She has great inner strength,” it can mean different things to each of us. The word “strong” has a wide variety of definitions available for it, but the one(s) I want to concentrate on here are those relating to strength of character; strength of spirit. Hands down the largest message I want to impart in this piece is that just because someone appears to be strong… behaves in a manner that expresses a greater inner strength… is constantly helping others, DOES NOT mean that they aren’t fighting their own battles. Touching Another’s Soul

A long time ago a friend of mine told me that psychologists are just overpaid bartenders who don’t serve you drinks. While that’s an oversimplification of both professions, if you stop and think about it there’s some truth to the outlook. A great many people with problems talk to their bartender… and the more they drink the looser their tongue gets so their honesty gets more pure. I’d be willing to bet that many bartenders hear more problems from people than any average psychologist. Continue reading

Physical fitness has mattered to me for one reason or another for the better part of forty years.  Ever since I was in high school running track, playing soccer, wrestling… I needed to be in shape. When I enlisted in the Army fitness was mandate and part of the promotion process. On the police department fitness may well have meant the difference between life and death in a fight for your life. It more often meant the difference between whether or not you could catch the suspect running away from you.
