“What follows ‘I am’ is far more important than what follows ‘You are’.” I put that quote up on Facebook a while back and got a LOT of traction with it. It seems so simple a concept – what you think and say about yourself matters more than what others think and say about you. Right? There shouldn’t be any argument about that. But in reality, we spend a lot of time thinking and worrying about how others perceive us; what they think of us; how they view us; what our reputation is and so on. I’m as guilty as the rest. And then something will happen, or I’ll ready something or hear something… and it’ll help to ground me. It will remind me: what I think of me is more important than what someone else thinks of me. There are many different kinds of energy, and that’s not even getting into the existential discussion about Einstein’s theory and how all mass is also energy. No, I’m talking about the energies each of us contains: physical energy, mental energy, emotional energy. We also have spiritual energy although some would argue that’s just a combination of mental and emotional energy. I think that’s a matter of your belief structure, but for the sake of this piece it’s being included here. The question is, and something we all need to consider, is how we spend and balance our energy. Spending too much of one kind in one place can create an imbalance that is unhealthy. Every day it’s inevitable: I talk with someone who, at some point during the conversation, says, “I wish…” WHAT they wish for may be highly improbable. “I wish I could win the lottery.” “I wish I could go back in time and change blah blah blah.” “I wish…” But some of what they utter a wish for IS obtainable if only they would ACT to make their wish come true. “I wish I could control my future.” “I wish I was skinnier.” “I wish I was built better.” Hmmm… I’m pretty sure you can make such wishes come true.
